Basal Generator needs your pump data from Medtronic CareLinkā¢. You set up the connection once, in the app, and after that the server fetches new data on its own. This guide covers the requirements, installation, the choice of CareLink account and the most common problems.
Before you start
- You must use the MiniMed Mobile app. It sends your pump data to CareLink continuously, in the background. Uploading the pump by hand from time to time does not give enough data for the analysis.
- You need a CareLink account that already shows your pump data, so keep MiniMed Mobile installed, connected to the pump and uploading.
- Basal Generator reads only automatic basal delivery, so your MiniMed⢠780G has to work in SmartGuard⢠Auto Mode. A pump that was never in Auto Mode gives nothing to analyze.
- Connect early. The history Basal Generator can analyze is the history it has collected, and that starts on the day you connect.
Install and connect
- Install the Basal Generator app from Google Play.
- In the Basal Generator tab, create an account and confirm your email address with the button in the message. The message can land in the spam folder, and unconfirmed accounts are deleted after 7 days. Then log in.
- Open the CareLink tab and log in with your CareLink account. Which one to use is explained below.
- The app sends access tokens to the server, not your CareLink password. The server checks them, saves them and runs a first sync right away.
- When the status card shows Connected & Syncing, your results appear on the home page. Collect data for at least a few days; with fewer than 7 days the page warns that results may be inaccurate.

No Android phone? Create an account on this site, log in and download the desktop app for Windows, macOS or Linux from the home page. It opens a browser window for the CareLink login. Windows may show a SmartScreen warning, which is common for little-known programs, so download the app only from this site.
Which CareLink account to connect
Basal Generator logs in to CareLink with a token. Every new login to the same CareLink account, on the CareLink website or in another app such as Nightscout, can invalidate that token, and then you have to log in here again.
The simplest setup: your regular CareLink account, the one you use in MiniMed Mobile. This is how I connect my own account, and it works without any problems.
The most reliable setup, if you also use the same account elsewhere (the CareLink website, Nightscout, other apps):
- Create a separate CareLink Partner account and link it to your main account. It needs its own email address, and Medtronic's CareLink help describes the invitation steps.
- Log in with that Partner account in Basal Generator only.
- Never use it anywhere else: not on the CareLink website, not in Nightscout and not in any other app.
- Keep using your main account for everything else, including the MiniMed Mobile app.
How syncing works
- The server fetches new data automatically about every 4 hours.
- You can start a sync yourself with the Sync now button, once per 12 hours. The card shows when the button is available again.
- The status card shows the time of the last sync. Newest data above the chart is the time of the latest delivery, which can be earlier.
When something goes wrong
- "No data yet" after connecting - wait for the first sync to finish. Then check in CareLink that your pump data are current (MiniMed Mobile must be uploading) and that the pump has been in SmartGuard Auto Mode.
- "Token expired - reconnection required" - CareLink no longer accepts the saved token. The usual cause is a login to the same CareLink account somewhere else, or a changed CareLink password. Open the CareLink tab in the app and log in again, and syncing resumes. You also get an email when a sync fails for this reason. To make it happen less often, switch to a separate CareLink Partner account.
- "Sync failed" or a message that CareLink is temporarily unreachable - CareLink or the connection to it had a temporary problem. The account stays connected and the server tries again in the next cycle, so there is nothing to do.
- Very little data - Basal Generator needs the data that MiniMed Mobile sends to CareLink automatically. Uploading the pump by hand is not enough for a continuous history.
- Sync now is refused - only one manual sync per 12 hours is allowed. Wait for the countdown or rely on the automatic sync.
- The confirmation email does not arrive - check the spam folder and wait a few minutes. If it still does not come, write through the contact form.
Disconnecting
To stop the access, change your CareLink password, which makes the saved tokens useless, or delete your account with the Delete account button on the home page. Deleting the account removes your data.
